Activities and Parent Involvement

Soccer Shots

Soccer Shots is a national soccer program designed for children 3-8 years old to introduce them to the game of soccer. Soccer Shots not only teaches children the basic skills of soccer but places a high emphasis on character development as well. Thousands of children throughout the United States each year experience the fun and excitement of Soccer Shots! *This program is offered at an additional charge.

Tuff Tumblers

Tuff Tumblers is a noncompetitive gymnastic and recreation program. It provides your child with a safe and healthy environment and improves your child's motor skills, coordination, and self-confidence!

Children, ages two through eight, have fun and are challenged while using a variety of equipment, including ladders, tunnels, balance beams, and the "earthball." They learn sport skills ranging from basketball to soccer and learn gymnastics stunts, including handstands, cartwheels, straddlerolls, somersaults, and much more! www.tufftumblers.com
*This program is offered at an additional charge.

Young Rembrandts

"The arts teach children that problems can have more than one solution and that questions can have more than one answer."

Drawing is the fundamental skill of the visual arts that can - and should - be learned by all children. Young Rembrandts teaches the drawing skills children need while developing learning skills that give children an academic advantage in the classroom.

The Young Rembrandts unique and proven method was developed by an artist and educator. For over 20 years we have delivered a top quality classroom experience that is fun, engaging, educational and affordable. www.youngrembrandts.com

Spanish Hour

Twice a week, for children three and up, we practice language immersion in a fun, and hands-on way that helps connect language learning with practical objects and needs. The children may be involved in a cooking project, or practicing exercises, or going on a nature walk. Our Spanish speaking teachers work with the children to introduce them to new words and empower them to use their words across a variety of activities in the curriculum.

Field Trips

For those three and up, we take a monthly field trip to different locations in the area. We attend the local library, the San Jose Children's Museum, the Children's Zoo in Palo Alto, Coyote Point Museum for environmental education, the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, among other places. Events are carefully managed and a certain number of parents are required to participate. The children have an amazing time seeing new places, and the events help develop and deepen their relationships with their teachers.

Stewardship and Community Service

This year we are kicking off our commitment to fostering a passion for service and stewardship at all stages of life. Children can make outstanding stewards of the earth and its resources, and they love having an environment in which to help and contribute. We are working with parents to discuss how children can set aside a small amount of money for donating to important causes (we focus for now on nickels and pennies), and we take such an offering from the children once a week on Fridays. Once a month we take children three and up to the local senior center where they sing songs for residents, play structured games, and make artwork which they leave at the center.

Annual Pageant at the Mountain View Center for Performing Arts!

In December or May (depending on the year), we hold a celebratory pageant at the Mountain View Center for Performing Arts. The children perform songs they have learned, teacher awards are issued, and we 'graduate' the children who are leaving us for the next steps in their education. This is a wonderful event with amazing music, followed by a reception in the Center's main foyer.

Family/Class Dinners

Twice a year we bring the families of each class together for dinner, fellowship, presentations by the teachers and a general discussion about the class and its progress. We encourage all the families to get to know each other, support each other, and to provide their feedback to the school so that each class can reach its highest potential. We have found no better way to build a tight knit, self-supporting community than to break bread together and learn about each other. The dinners are potluck, and a wonderful opportunity to ask the teachers questions and connect with other families.

Year-End Picnic

We close the 'school year' with an Annual Family picnic each May. We have a cookout, play games, get to know each other, and walk through 'year end displays' set up by the teachers to reflect and review the best of the work they did throughout the year.

Babysitting Nights

Once a quarter we offer a free Saturday afternoon/evening where we host your children for an evening of games and fun. You can run errands, go to dinner, see a movie - take your time! We'll be there from 4:30 to 9:00. We don't charge anything for the event, though a donation of $20 is greatly appreciated. We encourage you to let your neighbors know that they are welcome, whether or not they attend our school. Our doors are open and we see this as an important service to families in our community.

Parent Advisory Committee

Eight parents form our Parent Advisory Comittee, and membership rotates annually. This board of parents meet once a month to review school activities, discuss current concerns, and provide feedback to the school administration on their experience of the school and where improvements can be made. This group, along with all the feedback we receive from all our families, is our most valuable asset and resource in our schools -- we love hearing from you and using your input to continually make our schools into outstanding 'second homes' for your children.
